With the ball in a wide area, Manchester City played it inside and under the line of the ball 1678 times this season, 44.2 a match (2nd of 20). They keep the ball on 93% of them against 89% league-wide, and 33% end with the ball in the opposite wide channel inside twelve seconds. The narrow version the article is about - a wide player finding a midfielder - happens 6.6 times a match (1st of 20).

The choice: a wide player has the ball

"When play goes to wide areas, and opponents move with play to press the ball, where is the space? Either behind, or back underneath and central, against the grain of the press."

12,520 times this season a Manchester City player had the ball in a wide channel between his own box and the opponent's. This is what he did with it, and what the possession did next.

EVERY WIDE ACTION, WHAT WAS CHOSEN, AND HOW THE POSSESSION ENDED

A wide action is an open-play pass or carry started outside the width of the penalty area, between the edge of the own box and the edge of the attacking box. The back-space is the central band of the pitch entered at or under the line of the ball.

THE READ

Manchester City go inside and under the line on 13.4% of their wide actions, level with the league's 13.1%. It is the ball they lose least: 93% of those possessions survive, against 71% when they go forward down the line. It is also the slowest: 43% reach the final third against 57% for the line ball. The inside pass buys them the switch, not the break.

Where they play it, and which side

"There is a clear difference in the number of times this back-space has been activated on the left compared to the right. Why does our left side connect through the back-space more often?"

Where on the pitch Manchester City choose to go inside, and how evenly they do it on the two sides.

SHARE OF WIDE ACTIONS PLAYED INSIDE, BY ZONE

Each zone shows how often this team, with the ball in that wide channel, played it into the central band at or under the line of the ball. Shading is against the league rate for the same zone: darker means they go inside more than the league does there.

LEFT AGAINST RIGHT

Wide player to a midfielder specifically: 118 on the left against 134 on the right.

EVERY TEAM, LEFT AGAINST RIGHT

Wide player to midfielder, inside and under the line - the situation the article describes. Sorted by how lopsided the team is.

Manchester City connect inside from the right 134 times and from the left 118 times, an imbalance of 6% (16th most lopsided of 20). That is about as balanced as the league gets, so the two sides are probably being coached the same way. The zone picture says they go inside most from the left channel in the own third.

What the back-space is actually worth

Every option a wide player has, for Manchester City and for the league behind them. The grey tick on each bar is the league.

AGAINST THE OPPONENT'S BLOCK

THE NARROW VERSION: WIDE PLAYER TO MIDFIELDER

The article's own situation. Because a receiving player is only recorded on a completed pass, both sides of this comparison are completed passes.

Against a low block Manchester City go inside on 12.0% of their wide actions (league 11.7%); against a high press, 9.2% (league 6.8%). The narrow version - a wide player finding a midfielder - is worth 3.33 xG per 100 for them against 2.15 across the league, and it reaches the final third 58% of the time against 63% for the same players hitting the ball down the line.

What makes it work

"The near side CM runs away from becoming a passing option, dragging his marker with him. At the same time, the far side CM moves across to become active."

The conditions that turn a safe inside ball into a dangerous one. Run and combination detection comes from tracking, so these are league-comparable but conservative counts.

OFF-BALL RUNS AROUND THE BALL

Back-space actions split by what teammates were doing in the four seconds around the ball. Run detection is conservative, so these shares are a floor.

THIRD-MAN COMBINATIONS

Up from the wide area, back underneath into the middle, then through, inside eight seconds. The most productive route out of a wide area in the league.

WHO RECEIVES IT

League-wide. In the own third the back-space pass is mostly a goalkeeper or a centre-back recycling; the midfielder the article draws only takes over higher up.

When a Manchester City teammate is running in behind as the inside ball is played, it is worth 3.48 xG per 100 against 2.10 with nobody moving - 1.7 times as much. Their third-man combinations - up, back underneath, then through - come 4.4 times a match (league 5.8) and are worth 3.83 xG per 100, 1.8 times a plain inside pass.

Who plays it

Manchester City players with at least 450 league minutes, per 90. Hover any row for what the action produced.

THE LEAGUE: MOST WIDE-PLAYER-TO-MIDFIELDER PASSES PER 90

R. Aït-Nouri plays the article's pass more than anyone at the club, 2.79 times per 90, and Manchester City keep the ball on 100% of them. The man on the end of the inside ball most often is Rúben Dias (9.71 per 90), and 44% of the possessions he takes it in reach the final third. Off the dribble, Rodri rolls inside most (0.91 per 90).

The final third: the edge of the box

"Attack the end-line, pull numbers out/away, and make hard runs to goal."

In the final third the back-space is the edge of the box. It only opens if somebody is threatening the by-line and the space behind the back line.

WHAT THIS TEAM PUTS INTO THE BOX AND ONTO THE EDGE

Open-play passes played from the final third, per match, with what each was worth in expected goals from a shot within six seconds.

LEAGUE: THE DEEP RUN IS THE WHOLE THING

The same pass, with and without a deep or diagonal run into the box in the seconds around it. xG per 100 passes, league-wide.

Manchester City get to the by-line for a cutback 2.4 times a match (league 2.0), worth 3.21 xG per 100 against 2.94 for their crosses. They put the ball onto the edge of the box from wide 4.3 times a match. League-wide that pass is worth 1.64 xG per 100 with nobody running beyond and 4.02 when someone is. The edge is only the back-space when the run is there.

How this is built. Every open-play pass and carry in the Premier League 2025/26 (380 matches, 186,807 wide actions). A wide action starts outside the width of the penalty area, between 20 and 85 along the pitch. The back-space is the central 40% of the width, entered at or under the line of the ball (no more than 2 units of length ahead of the start). Outcomes are measured on the rest of that possession: possession kept means at least two more own touches, the final third within 15 seconds, the switch within 12. Off-ball runs come from tracking. Set pieces are excluded.
